Wireless phones generations

Know about the different mobile phone generations that showed up since the creation of the wireless phone networks.

FIRST GENERATION (1G)
The 1G of mobile phones showed up in 1979. It was analogical and strictly specified for voice.

The communications quality was very low by that time and it had very low speed (2400 bauds).

As regards the transfer among cells, it was very untrustworthy since they relied on a low capacity (Based on FDMA, Frequency Division Multiple Access) and besides, security did not exist.

The prevailing technology of this generation was AMPS (Advanced Mobile Phone System).

SECOND GENERATION (2G)
The 2G arrived by 1990 and introduced the innovation of digital communications. The 2G system uses complex coding protocols and is used in the current cell phone systems.

The prevailing technologies are: GSM (Global System Mobile Communications), IS-136 (known also as TIA/EIA136 o ANSI-136) CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) and PDC (Personal Digital Communications), the latter being used in Japan.

Many telecommunication services providers will move to the 2.5G networks before massively adopting the third. The 2.5G technology is faster and cheaper to upgrade to 3G.

The 2.5G Generation offers extended features, since it relies on additional capacities as compared to the 2G systems, such as: GPRS (General Packet Radio System), HSCSD (High Speed Circuit Switched), EDGE (Enhanced Data Rates for Global Evolution), IS-136B and IS-95Bm among others.

The European and American carriers moved to 2.5G in 2001, while Japan went directly from 2G to 3G.

THIRD GENERATION (3G)
The 3G is identified for containing the convergence of voice and data with wireless access to internet, In other words, it is appropriate for multimedia applications and high data transmissions.

The protocols used in 3G systems manage high information speed and are specified for applications beyond voice transmission, such as audio (mp3), video in movement, teleconference and speed access to Internet, just to name a few. 3G networks are expected to start operating in 2001 in Japan by NTT DoCoMo; in Europe and part of Asia in 2002 and USA and others later.

Also, in a non distant future 3G systems will reach 384 kbps speeds, allowing users for total mobility, traveling outdoors at 75 miles per hour. It will also reach a maximum speed of 2 Mbps, allowing users for limited mobility, moving slower than 6 miles per hour. In short reach stationary environments or indoors.

As to predictions on the number of users that 3G could handle, The Yanlee Group foretells that in 2004 there will be more than 1,150 millions worldwide, as compared to the 700 millions in 2000. Such numbers foretell us a huge capital involved in wireless communication. Technology producers and providers of telecommunications services will be interested in investing capital in this new adventure called 3G.
